Student News

  • Emerson Ahn, a French horn student of Lori Amada and a piano student of Laurie Ticehurst, plays horn as a member of the Philadelphia Sinfonia Players, Bravo Brass, and the Harriton High School Orchestra and Band.
  • Carson Atlas, a private piano student of Eleanor Sokoloff who also studies with Marcantonio Barone at the Conservatory, won the first prize at the 2015 New Orleans Piano Institute Solo Piano Competition. In January, he performed, both as piano soloist and in collaboration with alumni, in the Alumni of the Arts Night at Delaware County Christian School, where he is also the choir accompanist.
  • Suzanne Carpenter, who studies piano with Marcantonio Barone and theory with Andrew Desiderio, is the pianist of the Jazz Band at Archbishop Carroll High School. Also an accomplished violinist, she performed at Springfield High School in January, as a member of the District Orchestra of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, District 12.
  • Michael Ching, who studies violin with John Sergovic, is first-chair second violinist in the Radnor Middle School Orchestra and was invited to perform in the school’s Advanced Ensemble as well.
  • Justin Chow, a violin student of John Sergovic at the Conservatory and a fourth-grader at Beaumont Elementary School, is now in his second year as a member of the Philadelphia Region Youth String Music (PRYSM) Young Artists Orchestra and performed in the Orchestra’s recent concert at Centennial Hall in Haverford.
  • William Cosgrove, a violin student of John Sergovic, is a member of the All-Archdiocesan Symphony Orchestra.
  • Leila Haddad, who studies voice with Judith Malis and piano with Daina Dodbiba, sang a solo, “Angel Gabriel”, at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart’s Christmas Show. In March, she will appear in the role of Sarah in Guys and Dolls, her school’s spring musical.
  • Emily Han, a voice student of Kathryna Barone and piano student of Marcantonio Barone, is the co-leader of the a cappella group Pro Musica at Radnor High School.
  • David Huang, a student of Marcantonio Barone, received Honorable Mention in the 2015 International Young Artist Piano Competition in Washington, D.C. This past summer, he gave a solo piano recital at Sunrise Senior Living in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania.
  • Krista Jasillo and Robert Simmons, students of Bronwyn Fix-Keller at the Conservatory, sing in a performance of Mozart’s comic Singspiel Der Schauspieldirektor in Schlack Hall at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Devon on Sunday, 31 January, at 3:00 P.M. The performance will be under the direction of Ms. Fix-Keller.
  • Erika Kramer, a student of John Sergovic, is the first-chair violist in Episcopal Academy’s Sixth-Grade Orchestra.
  • Stephen Li, a piano student of Marcantonio Barone, won first place in the Senior Piano division of the 2015 Tri-County Concerts Youth Festival, and first place in the age 16 to 18 division of the 2015 West Chester University Annual Piano Competition. Now a freshman at the Pennsylvania State University, he is continuing his piano studies there with Prof. Christopher Guzman.
  • Allison Liao, a violin student of John Sergovic, is concertmaster of the Welsh Valley Middle School Orchestra and performed in their 2015 winter concert.
  • In December 2015, Longan Loi, a piano student of Marcantonio Barone, organized, and performed in, a benefit concert for the Hope for Henry Foundation at Jacobs Music in Willow Grove, and performed in a concert presented by the Book Bridge Club at the Bryn Mawr Terrace.
  • In March, Madeleine Pelchat, a voice student of Judith Malis and a piano student of Daina Dodbiba, will play the role of Madame de la Grande Bouche in Haverford High School’s spring musical, Beauty and the Beast.
  • Cheryl Platco, a piano student of Alexander Panku, is Director of Music at St. Helena Roman Catholic Church in Blue Bell and directed the Christmas Concert there in December.
  • In the fall of 2015, soprano Mary Punshon, who studies with Kathryna Barone at the Conservatory, sang the role of Dorabella in a concert performance of Mozart’s Così fan tutte with the Main Line Opera Guild, and performed selections from Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore with the Savoy Company for the Homecoming festivities at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Soprano Emily Lasker Reich, a student of Kathryna Barone, has been invited by Artistic Director Julia Zavadsky to sing with Nashirah, the Jewish Chorale of Greater Philadelphia. The group recently performed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and they will sing at the Holocaust Memorial in May.
  • Andrea Salas, a student of Kathryna Barone, completed a Senior Vocal Music Project with a recital at Harriton High School in December 2015. Accompanied by Oxana Harlamova, the Bryn Mawr Conservatory’s Vocal Repertoire and Accompanying teacher, she sang a program that included works by Donaudy, Rodrigo, and Poulenc, as well as selections from Broadway musicals.
  • In the fall of 2015, Julia Seeley, a sophomore at the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart who studies voice with Kathryna Barone at the Conservatory, performed in the Media Theatre’s production of Gypsy and in the Broadway Theatre of Pitman’s holiday musical show Holly and Ivy.
  • Noa Spanier, a viola student of John Sergovic, was accepted into the Bala Cynwyd Middle School Chamber Orchestra in the fall of 2015. She has been invited to play a Mozart String Quartet with other members of the Orchestra.
  • AvaGrace Tuft, a voice student of Kathryna Barone and piano student of Daina Dodbiba, is a member of Haverford Middle School’s Seventh Heaven choir. In December 2015, the choir won the More FM Christmas Choir Competition and performed with the Philly Pops in their Christmas Spectacular in Verizon Hall.
  • Roy Wu, a piano student of Daina Dodbiba, performed in December 2015 as accompanist for the sixth-grade chorus at Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School. He will play again in the school’s spring concert.
  • Justin Yeo, a student of Mackenzie Carlson and Marcantonio Barone, is the pianist of the Delaware County Youth Orchestra. He played in the Orchestra’s performance of Aaron Copland’s Rodeo in November 2015.
  • Andy Zeng, a piano student of Daina Dodbiba and violin student of John Sergovic, will accompany the sixth-grade chorus at Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School in their 2016 spring concert.
  • In the fall of 2015, Michelle Zhai, a viola student of John Sergovic, was appointed first-chair violist in the Sky View Upper Elementary School Orchestra.

Many of our students are multitalented and excel in musical and artistic activities that they pursue in addition to their studies at the Conservatory:

  • Roya Alidjani, who studies piano with Laurie Ticehurst at the Conservatory, also sings as a member of the B-Flats at the Baldwin School.
  • Elizabeth Carpenter, a piano student of Diana Dodbiba, is a member of the Bella Voce choir at E. T. Richardson Middle School.
  • Marcus Chiang, a piano student of Laurie Ticehurst at the Conservatory, is a cellist in the Rainbow Ensemble at the Friends Central School.
  • Zachary Root, a piano student of Laurie Ticehurst, is also a violist in the Penn Valley Elementary School Orchestra.
  • Jamie Taglang, who studies piano with Daina Dodbiba at the Conservatory, is a member of the prize-winning Seventh Heaven choir at Haverford Middle School.
  • Claire Weiss, a piano student of Laurie Ticehurst, is a member of the Select Chorus at Harriton High School.
  • Owen Wetherbee, a piano student of Alexander Panku, played French horn in December concerts of the band and orchestra at Bala Cynwyd Middle School.
  • Joy Xiong, who studies piano with Laurie Ticehurst at the Conservatory, is the 2015 recipient of the George H. Slick Award for two-dimensional art at Strath Haven High School. She is also a member of the Marching Band, Chorus, and Select Chorus at Strath Haven.

Faculty News

  • Elizabeth Keller, of the Conservatory’s piano faculty, performed in November 2015 in a concert of the ensemble Kammermusik Main Line at the Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon. The following month, at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr and at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, she gave solo piano recitals including works of Bach, Haydn, Bloch, and Debussy, as well as the B minor Sonata of Chopin.
  • In October 2015, Alexander Panku, of the Conservatory’s piano faculty, played a recital at the Artman Retirement Community in Ambler. The Ambler Symphony has commissioned Dr. Panku to orchestrate the first movement of his four-movement Piano Sonata for performance by the orchestra at a future concert.
  • In November 2015, John Sergovic, who teaches violin and viola at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory, performed Mozart’s E minor Violin Sonata and Mendelssohn’s C minor Piano Trio with faculty members of the Kimberton Waldorf School at Rose Hall in Kimberton, Pennsylvania.
